Bambu Lab P1P Review: The Modder's Dream Machine
With the release of the enclosed P1S, many people forgot about the Bambu Lab P1P. But this stripped-down CoreXY machine has a secret weapon: customizability.
It is essentially the same chassis and motion system as the expensive X1 Carbon, but without the glass walls, door, or auxiliary fan. And that is exactly why I love it.
Performance on a Budget
The print quality of the P1P is identical to the P1S. You get the same CoreXY speed (500mm/s), the same vibration compensation, and the same reliable extrusion.
- PLA King: Because it's open-air, it's actually better for printing PLA than the enclosed printers, which can sometimes get too hot and cause heat creep clogs.
The "ARC" Enclosure and Mods
This is where the P1P shines. Bambu Lab released the template files for the side panels, allowing you to print your own "shell."
I printed the community-designed "ARC" enclosure for mine. It allowed me to choose my own colors, add custom LED lighting, and mount a specialized camera bracket. If you are the type of person who buys a PC case just to mod it, the P1P is your canvas.
What You Miss Out On
To save money, the P1P cuts a few corners compared to the P1S:
- No Enclosure: You can't print ABS or ASA reliably without adding panels.
- Weaker Fan: It lacks the "Aux Fan" for extreme overhangs (though you can buy one and install it easily).
The Verdict
The P1P is the "DIY Edition" of the Bambu lineup.
You should buy it if:
- You exclusively print PLA and PETG.
- You love 3D printing upgrades for your 3D printer (printing your own side panels is a rite of passage).
- You want to save $100 vs the P1S to spend on filament instead.
You should skip it if:
- You have pets or kids (the open frame has moving parts exposed).
- You just want to unbox it and print ABS immediately.
